Vice President Joe Biden was forced to answer a question about whether he believed women should be allowed to have abortions during an interview on the Today Show.

“I was asked the question today, do I believe women should have the right to get an abortion? And my answer is absolutely,” Biden said in response to the question from Matt Lauer of the Today Show.

“I support Roe v. Wade and think that Roe is the law of the land,” he said. “And as to anything else, I would defer to the Supreme Court.”

The topic of abortion comes up in several interviews with the Vice President, most recently when he was asked by Newscorp reporter Andrea Mitchell: “Do you believe in any restrictions on abortion?”

“I’m not going to commit to anything, but you can count on the fact that Roe is the law of the land,” he said.

“As you know, as a Catholic I believe that life begins at conception.”

Biden’s response, delivered during an interview Wednesday for NPR’s Weekend Edition, came the same morning the Senate voted down a measure that would have allowed any doctor to perform an abortion, despite a prior Supreme Court decision that said states had the right to ban abortions.
